The Finnish Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa (RTIA) 2027 is inviting eligible organisations to submit research proposals focused on improving teacher education and working conditions across sub-Saharan Africa. The call is being coordinated by the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) and is open to public or private non-profit organisations based in Europe or Africa that are working together through a consortium involving both European and African organisations. If your organisation is involved in education research and has the capacity to contribute to solutions addressing teacher-related challenges in Africa, this call may be relevant to your team.

The initiative is financed by the European Commission and forms part of the EU’s Global Gateway investment strategy. It places teachers at the centre of education investment by supporting research that can generate practical evidence and recommendations for policymakers and education practitioners. Proposed research is expected to contribute to a better understanding of how teacher training can be strengthened and how teacher wellbeing in the workplace can be improved, particularly in countries across sub-Saharan Africa where education systems continue to face significant workforce challenges.

A key objective of the Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa is to contribute to evidence-based approaches that can help address teacher shortages and reduce teacher attrition in the region. Organisations interested in submitting a proposal should carefully review the call requirements, eligible applicants, consortium conditions, research priorities, funding provisions, required documents, and submission deadline. Applicants should also ensure that their proposed research clearly demonstrates how its findings could inform education policy and practice and contribute to more effective teacher development and retention.
